I went into the operating room while they put Jackson out. That was kind of hard for me, even after working with lots of sick babies in the hospital and being used to operating rooms! It was strange to see my baby so limp. But when he was asleep, I laid him on the table, gave him a quick kiss and walked out.

Surgery
Yesterday (Tuesday October 7) Jackson went in to Swedish Hospital for a minor surgery. He would probably do it all over again because he had a blast! He was quite carefree, while his parents (mostly mom) were doing the worrying. They had some very fun kiddie waiting rooms to pass the time.

Does this look like the face of a child who hasn't eaten for eight hours? We went to see the Dr. the day before and they happened to have an opening the next day so we took it. Then they told us that Jackson was the oldest patient on the schedule (what?!) which meant he would be last at 12:30. He couldn't have any solids after midnight or milk after 5 (AM) so mom got up at 4:30 to feed him. We even fed him dinner at 8PM and kept him up until 10 hoping he would sleep most of the morning, but he woke up at about 8:15. To our surprise, he did so well. The morning was a little hard as we were getting ready to go because Jackson wanted to be entertained. But he took a nap in the car and then had a blast playing with all the toys. We felt like we were blessed, as it easily could have been a horrible morning since he was so hungry.
His favorite part was getting the gas masks! At first they gave him one that was too big, so he ended up getting two. They put banana flavored chap stick in them and he loved trying to suck on them. I loved the little gown he got.

We passed the time in the fun waiting room. They even had a wii (Kevin's favorite part).
Waking up was the worst. Jackson wasn't too happy. When we went into the recovery room he was drinking a bottle of glucose water. He ended up drinking two of those and would scream if the nurses tried to take them away! A little while later I was able to feed him and then he was offered some applesauce, which he gladly accepted! He was a starving little guy. Then the nurses brought out some graham crackers, which Jackson has never tried before, and those are now his favorite treat! He was still eating them as we left the hospital!
By far, my favorite part of the day was the snuggle time Jackson gave me. We haven't done that since he was probably 5 months old. Sweet little guy. The nurses were all very helpful and kind as well as the Dr. We're glad the day is over though. It was exhausting!

Jackson used this toy as a walker. Also, while in the waiting room, Jackson took his first two steps! Watch out mom and dad!

Jackson,
We're glad your surgery went well! You looked so sweet in your little hospital gown. Congratulations on taking your first steps, too! "Oh, the places you'll go!"

I agree, it is weird/sad to see your child go limp like that before surgery. I'm glad all went well and that he did fine even hungry. Poor boy.
Jeanne! Hi! I found your blog from an old e-mail you sent a long time ago. That's so sad that your boy had to go through surgery-- I thin that would be so hard as a mom to watch. Congrats on him being such a trooper. I hope he's recovering okay.

He is still starving :} Your hubby and Heidi's hubby were talking about the stuff they do for the kids in the hospital and I told them the lady is a "Child Life Specialist" They weren't sure that it was worth insurance payment... I then told them my daughter was a "Child Life Specialist" at Primary Children's Hospital. I loved the look on their face... he he he
We missed you last night. Kev said it was his fault.
Logan has had two surgeries and Abby has had one. I have to say it doesn't get any easier to let them go. I'm so glad everything went well. We'll be thinking about you.
